C2 Consdorf – Adventure Kuelscheier

  • Family friendly 5km loop. Not suitable for pushchairs.
  • An accessible and easy way to access the fabulous Kuelscheier dark passages and rock formations; one of the absolute highlights of the Mullerthal Trail!
  • Start at Consdorf Rue Dielchen (Bus Stop: Op der Gare). Parking available.

I bet this happens a lot: tourists and casual hikers look at those stunning Mullerthal Trail photos and want to go there, only to get that sinking feeling when they realise even the shortest main loop is 36km long!

But fear not! There are plenty of easier ways to experience the magic without a marathon hike. They’re just not as well promoted.

Take the jaw-droppingly beautiful “Kuelscheier” near Consdorf, for example. This awe-inspiring chaos of towering rocks and pitch-black caves is a star attraction on the Mullerthal Trail 2. But you don’t need to hike all day to reach it – simply take a stroll on the C2 trail in Consdorf instead!*

The C2 – including a short, signposted, deviation to take in the “Kuelscheier Adventure” – is just under 5km long, but most of the action happens in one glorious kilometre right in the middle.

The opening stretch through Consdorf village is calm and pleasant – quiet back roads with elegant old farmhouses and laughing children playing in the streets, then a descent between fields into the forest proper.

But even as the trees close in around you, there is still little hint of the drama that is to come…

The show begins once you step off the wide forest path and up some stone steps… and things get wilder, fast. A dark crevice here, an impossible rock formation there – until you quickly reach the first of three dark passages that make this section of the trail so celebrated: the Rittergang.

This is by far the shortest of the three, and doesn’t become fully dark. But it’s a nice warm-up for what comes next: the Déwepëtz. You’ll need to put your fear of the dark (and possibly spiders…) aside to squeeze through this narrow passage, although the truly pitch black segment is still rather short.

The scenery between the Déwepëtz and the Kuelscheier is quite possibly the most spectacularly beautiful of any stretch of any hiking trail anywhere in Luxembourg… and well beyond. Moss-covered boulders sprout dark green ferns. Towering sandstone cliffs and sturdy beech trees rise all around you, laced with a labyrinth of trails. It’s a full-blown Mullerthal riot, the sort of place where you simply don’t know what to look at next, and the camera never quite captures the buzz of actually being there.

This is where I recommend veering briefly from the official C2 trail to follow the signs for the “Adventure Kohlscheuer”. Don’t worry about getting lost (or spelling…) – that’s all part of the experience – and after a quickfire succession of gorges, canyons, steps and viewpoints, you’ll find yourself standing at the entrance to the Kuelscheier itself. Switch on your torch… and in you go!

Entrance to the “Kuelscheier” cave in Consdorf, Luxembourg

This passage isn’t noticeably longer than the Déwepëtz but the difference is that in the Kuelscheier you will be in absolute darkness for almost all of it. Inside, there’s also a section of narrow, twisting steps to navigate. All in all, it’s a memorable experience for kids (of all sizes and ages).

This is undoubtedly the trail’s climax, but it’s not the end of the stunning scenery. Circling back round to the cave entrance again, the trail decrescendos beautifully down to crystal-clear ponds with plenty of picnic tables for that crucial mid-hike family snack.

Phew! You need to calm down from all that drama, and the combination of the picnic tables and the final kilometre or two of the trail is the perfect way to do it. From here, it’s a gentle uphill stroll through serene forest, occasionally interrupted by open farmland, back to your starting point. It was late evening by the time I reached the outskirts of Consdorf again, having spent far longer exploring the Kuelscheier than planned. The light had turned golden, flickering across the leaves and footpath in a quiet, glowing end to an unforgettable walk.

In summary, if the big Mullerthal Trail loops feel out of reach, start here. The Kuelscheier is one of the region’s most dazzling highlights – and thanks to the C2 trail, it’s just a short and spectacular stroll away. Enjoy!

Useful links and info.

  • Official trail website.
  • For families: there is a nice playground at the start / end point.
  • Also for families: Although kids will adore this adventure, there are some dangerous sections (e.g. cliffs). Keep your little ones close by and safe at all times.
  • Parking full? Just leave your car by the side of the road alongside the playground instead.

*There is an even shorter, easier way of accessing the Kuelscheier: park at “Consdorf Moulin” and pick up the Mullerthal Trail signposts, returning the same way (approx. 3km). However, unless you are seriously pressed for time, the C2 is a more pleasant and fulfilling way to visit this area.
