Haff Réimech Nature Discovery Trail

  • An easy, 5km stroller-friendly loop around one of Luxembourg’s most important wetland sites.
  • Includes visits to birdwatching hideouts and the impressive “Biodiversum” discovery centre.
  • By car (recommended): Park at 5, Bréicherwee Remerschen or – as I did – on Waistross, Wintrange.
  • By bus: Wintrange Dorefplaz or Remerschen Al Schoul.

Looking for an easy, family-friendly excursion into one of Luxembourg’s most scenic and wildlife-rich nature reserves? Then this Nature Discovery Trail is what you’ve been searching for. No hills, no barriers, no stress; just you, plenty of wooden walkways, a futuristic hands-on exhibition and loads and loads and loads of birds. Welcome to Haff Réimech!

There are, in fact, two “Nature Discovery Trails” at Haff Réimech. This article, along with the map above, focuses on Trail 1, which is the longer of the two, and takes in six hideouts where you can observe the birdlife of the lakes in discreet serenity. Trail 2 is much shorter (1.9km), and only takes in one of these hideouts, though it covers a similarly watery landscape.

Both trails strike out from the futuristic Biodiversum building, although you can (as I did) begin Trail 1 from the quieter car park at the exit of Wintrange (direction Remerschen). And since we are talking about practicalities, note that dogs are welcome on this trail provided they are kept on a lead at all times.

At the end of our five kilometre loop, my son casually remarked that this “wasn’t a real hike”, and I understand where he was coming from. After all, he’s a Mullerthal kid. To him, “hiking” means hills, forests, rocks, physical effort and mud, none of which can be found on this Nature Discovery Trail. Through his lens, Haff Réimech must seem like something of an alien landscape: an unfamiliar world of boardwalks, glassy water, reeds, water birds and an unwavering heartbeat.

Starting the trail from Wintrange gives you the advantage of encountering the Biodiversum halfway round. It’s a visually striking building – think Viking cathedral meets eco-chic – and there is a sizeable free hands-on exhibition inside, sure to captivate the little ones before continuing with your walk.

Equally, if not more, captivating are the birdwatching shelters dotted around the lakes. There are six on Trail 1, easily found by diverting from the path via the “viewpoint” symbol (see first photo after the map above). These are havens of serenity from which you can get closer to the abundant wildlife and reflect on the beauty of nature. If you’re fond of spotting rare species, come in spring and autumn to catch the birds on their epic journeys of migration. Bring binoculars; the huts aren’t equipped with any.

In short, Haff Réimech is less about conquering hills and more about gentle discovery. Families, bird lovers, and anyone curious about Luxembourg’s wetlands will find plenty to enjoy here at an easy, unhurried pace.
