Guttland Trail – Siwe Brécke Wee

5.1km – Easy (but not recommended for pushchairs) – Family-friendly

The Auto-Pédéstre (“AP”) Reimberg has recently been “upgraded” and re-branded as the very first “Guttland Trail“… and it’s exactly what you’d expect to find in the Guttland: tranquil beech forest, babbling streams and the occasional view over rolling farmland, gorgeously illuminated during our visit by the annual autumnal colour show.

The trail feels… nice. Crisp, clear new signposts are a clear improvement from the Auto-Pédestre offerings in two ways: First of all, they mark the trail in both directions, not one-way like the APs. Secondly, they also show the distance to points of interest, which may feel like an unnecessary luxury for a 5km loop, but will be very welcome for longer hikes in the region. In addition, there are lots of sturdy wooden benches to stop and rest and plenty of interesting information boards. It all feels very comfortable and slick and, at just over 5km short, a perfect family-Sunday-afternoon type of hike. I rather dig the new, organic-style “Guttland Trails” swirl too. Simple but welcoming.

“Siwe Brécke” translates as “Seven Bridges”, and the stretch of the trail along the wooden walkways in the “Schankegriecht” valley is quite clearly the highlight of the loop. In retrospect, I wish I’d counted them because it felt like there were definitely more than seven…

Erosion of the paths in this wet and fragile landscape is obviously a point of concern for the Guttland Trail; for the first time in Luxembourg I encountered parts of the trail that were off-limits to mountain bikes. Even though I’m a keen mountain biker myself, I wouldn’t mind at all to see this implemented more widely across the country.

Hikers’ priority over mountain bikers? Any thoughts on this?

You can park and begin at the Rochus Kapelle in Reimberg, just past 54 Rue St Roch. Don’t forget to check out the all-new forest memorial garden near the parking spot before setting out on the trail.

All in all, it’s very satisfying and pleasant, whetting the appetite nicely to discover the other Guttland Trails in the future.
