Beaufort Geotrail

First things first: The official name of this trail is the “Geo-Pad Haupeschbaach an Halerbaach“, a rather unnecessary and unhelpful mouthful. So, in the interests of simplicity, I have re-named it the “Beaufort Geotrail” instead. You’re welcome.

In this way, at the very least, the average hiker now has a good idea where to find it, and can plan to combine this scenic short tour with a trip to one of Luxembourg’s most famous and romantic castles.

That said, for those in the know the “Haupeschbaach” and “Halerbaach” are two of the prettiest valleys in all of the Mullerthal (arguably even Luxembourg) and this short-but-energetic hike showcases both rather beautifully, whilst edutaining walkers with ample information (in French, German and English) about the geology, flora and fauna of the region.

Despite initial appearances, the trail marker for this one isn’t a croissant, but a representation of a fossil commonly found in the Mullerthal. And it’s everywhere! In fact, since you can set off in either a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction from the starting point, you can easily have croissant fossil overload and find yourself going round a pretty park in circles until you find your way and finally start heading towards the forest. I recommend doing the tour clockwise since this leaves the main highlights (the stunning Haupeschbaach valley and – of course – Beaufort Castle) until the end.

A distinctive feature of the hike is the number and (high) quality of the information boards. The hands-on and visually attractive nature of the various “stations” will ensure that the little ones are entertained and the bigger ones almost certainly learn something new.

In short, this 5km trail really does have it all: spectacular scenery, clear signage, stunning views, serene forest and plenty to see / do along the way. Recommended!

Practical Info

Park and start at the “Beaufort Haarewiss” bus station. Even better, of course, take the bus: the 222 from Kirchberg LuxExpo runs hourly and takes just over 45 minutes.

Waterproof boots recommended; a short section of the path regularly floods, even in fairly dry weather.
