Five Alternatives to Visiting the Mullerthal Schiessentümpel Waterfall

The Schiessentümpel in Luxembourg’s Mullerthal region is so pretty. It really is. A perfectly whimsical stone bridge over a triptych waterfall, surrounded by mossy rocks and towering trees.

But it also gets crowded. Really crowded. I’ve driven past this waterfall almost every single day for years (yes, it is directly beside a main road) and can’t help but notice the steadily growing number of visitors hoping for that perfect Mullerthal photo. Come here on a sunny Sunday or school holiday and the number of people leaning over that little bridge sometimes makes me wonder if it’s strong enough to hold them all…

Let’s be clear: I’m not knocking the Schiessentümpel. Catch it right (early in the morning, for example) and it is undoubtedly one of Luxembourg’s sweetest spots. However, there are other things to see in the region, and here are five alternative trails which will likely give you a more satisfying Mullerthal experience than those three little spouts of water.

Trust me on this one.

Consdorf C2 Trail (Adventure Kuelscheier) – 5km – Family-friendly

Only a few kilometres from the waterfall, and much more fun.

This 5km loop starting from the village of Consdorf is quiet at first, but explodes into life halfway round, when it traverses one of the most dramatic sections of scenery anywhere in Luxembourg. Three dark passageways – the Rittergang, the Déwepëtz and the Kuelscheier – line the trail, the last two of which are pitch black inside (phone torch and bravery required!). The scenery immediately around these rock formations is equally as impressive, with towering sandstone cliffs and an utterly perfect series of forest ponds with picnic tables.

So bring a picnic and make the Kuelscheier Adventure into a perfect family Mullerthal excursion.

Berdorf B2 Trail – 4.5km – Family-friendly

I’m not going to sugar coat this: this trail on the outskirts of Berdorf can also get rather busy. But there is a very good reason for this: it’s arguably the best short hike in the Mullerthal.

I’d say that the B2 has the greatest concentration of sights per kilometre of any hiking trail in the Grand-Duchy, and it’s a huge hit with the kids too. You’ll cross canyons on a bouncy metal bridge, climb up ladders through a robbers’ den (optional), get lost in a rock labyrinth (you’ll find your way out, don’t worry) and generally explore a rocky wonderland so fabulous that you won’t know what to take photos of next.

Added bonus: there is an excellent café and a playground at the start / finish point. Who needs the waterfall anyway?

Beaufort B1 Trail – 11km – Intermediate

If the B2 is the best short trail in the Mullerthal, then the B1 is quite possibly the best hiking trail in the entire country, period.

Starting and finishing in the shadow of Beaufort’s imposing medieval castle, this trail is eleven richly varied kilometres of glorious Mullerthal woodland. The rocks may not be quite as high as in Berdorf and the waterfalls not quite as picture-perfect as the Schiessentümpel, but this is a trail where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

That said, there are plenty of highlights along the way: incredible viewpoints over the Sauer and Ernz valleys, the gushing mountain streams of the Haupeschbach and Hallerbach valleys, subtle traces of World War II and, of course, Beaufort castles.

I’ve heard this trail is going to be rebranded and more heavily marketed in the future, so catch it now before the world finds out about it.

Mullerthal Trail Extra Tour C – 10km – Intermediate

The Mullerthal Trail “Extra Tours” are, on the whole, a little disappointing. Nothing close to the excellent Beaufort B1, for example. The exception to this – and a refuge from crowds even on the busiest day – is the lovely Extra Tour C loop from Altrier.

Here you can find an authentic slice of the Mullerthal in 10km, from the classic rock formations to the lesser-celebrated rolling countryside. There are a few interesting curiosities along the way, too: the trail goes through an old railway tunnel (the kids love this!) and you’ll pass by one of Luxembourg’s grandest, most venerated oak trees. Topping it all off is a modern café at Becher Gare. A quieter alternative to the waterfall and tourist hotspots of the first three featured hikes.

Auto-Pédestre Larochette – 7km or 9km – Intermediate

The four trails above are all in the Consdorf / Beaufort / Berdorf area, so let’s go a little further west now to the picture-perfect village of Larochette, with its imposing castle lording it over narrow, ancient streets.

Starting right in the middle of town, this trail is centred on the Château de Larochette, taking you to the best viewpoints in town and right up to the castle gates themselves. In between, you’ll explore typical Mullerthal rocky scenery, then you can finish off with a well-deserved hot chocolate (or stronger) in one of the town’s many cafés. It’s a highly-recommended way to explore one of the region’s prettiest spots.

Finally, if you really MUST visit the Schiessentümpel but want to combine it with a genuinely good hike, I can recommend the Consdorf Auto-Pédestre (10km, Intermediate), a hypnotic, deeply forested loop through classic Mullerthal scenery. Enjoy!
